Perseus allows users to make up vocabulary lists for the texts they hold. However these need a lot of work on them as the word detection algorithms throw up a lot of alternatives for many of the actual words. Those lists were my starting point from which I cut out the words that don’t actually appear and added the few that somehow got missed out. I have tried also to make sure that the definitions fit how the words are used at that point in the text. You should not treat them as general definitions that apply in other contexts. So treat all the definitions with caution.
Use these as you wish. My suggestion is that you go over the words before you read a section. Perhaps you could compose short sentences for yourself and then read them back to yourself later. Only when you feel confident that you know the words read the next section and hopefully you will now be able to do so without having to look up any words.
My thinking behind this is the ideas of Stephen Krashen. His view is we learn by reading or listening to comprehensible input that is just a bit harder than we are comfortable with. To put it in Ancient Greek terms it means reading something that is difficult but which we can manage without resorting to the dictionary and without resorting to notes. If you need to do that, you should really be reading something simpler. The snag is that there is precious little that is easy around. The Tale of Anthia and Habrocomes is the easiest of the extant texts I know and it doesn’t fit Krashen’s definition of comprehensible input for me. My thinking is that if I prime myself by making myself thoroughly familiar with the words then, when I come to read the text, it will have become comprehensible input due to the preparation. Time will tell if this works.
The Ephesian Tale is available here at Perseus
I updated this page on the 5th September 2017. That should give you a good idea of how soon I'll add to the 6 chapters that are here so far.
